Treating Self Injury Disorder

There are times when emotional pain is just too much to bear and you feel that there is no other way to release it than cutting one’s wrist. This is called self-injury, self-harm, or deliberate self-harm. It is the act of deliberately inflicting physical pain to oneself through damaging or altering a part of the body, usually the wrists, without the intent of committing suicide. Such condition is listed as a mental disorder as a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorders and Depression. Most often than not, such act is performed to relieve unbearable pain, which causes sensations of unreality and numbness.

Since self-harm is done by an individual because of pain, avoidance technique is one of the strategies used to treat patients with such disorder. Generally, the techniques are aimed at keeping the person busy by activities that include journaling, getting involved in sports, being around friends, and many others. In addition, patients are made to avoid objects that can be used to inflict injury on themselves.
