Histrionic
The histrionic personality disorder shares some common characteristics with the borderline personality disorder. It can be remembered that individuals with borderline personality disorder have diverse emotions and unstable relationships with other people. Like them, individuals with histrionic personality disorder have unpredictable moods and emotions, mainly because their emotions easily shift and vary. But in times of seeking favour and attention from others, persons who have borderline personality disorder are discreet and keep themselves in the background, in the hope that people may give them more attention. On the contrary, individuals having histrionic personality disorder put themselves in the centre of attention. They speak in a highly dramatic manner. They are viewed by others as demanding, selfish, and always dependent.
In a family setting, people who are diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder are more likely to get separated or divorced rather than remain married. They always feel the need for exaggeration, and so, they always think of medical problems and rush to get medical visits. They are also found to be more prone to suicide attempts and threats.
Experts have studied that the majority of people developed with this disorder are women.
As of this writing, it is still unclear if this disorder can be genetically connected or history in the family or environment increases the probability of developing this disorder. However, psychodynamic theorists consider that what triggers this disorder is the extreme need for dependency and the individual’s repression of his or her own emotions. Histrionic people are always hungry for approval from others, which leads to attention seeking. They are people who constantly feel inadequate and love to have others help them live their lives. These people are commonly flamboyant and always trying to look pretty. They cannot tolerate boredom and so, resort to get attention from people around them. These individuals always have in mind the necessity of doing something just to get the attention and receive praise from people special to them, especially their parents.
